Augustus 27 BC – 14 AD

#1060

Description: Augustus silver denarius, Rome

Obverse: [CAESAR] AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER [PATRIAE], laureate hear right

Reverse: [C L CAESARES] AVGVSTI F COS DESIG [PRINC IVVEN], Caius and Lucius Caesar standing togated and each holding shield and spear, lituus and simplum (priestly implements) between their head.

Reference: RIC , RSC 43, Sear , VM 51

Grade and condition: VF, smallish flan with some of the inscription off, neat “S” bankers mark between the two princes

Weight: 3.65g

Rarity: common

Comments: Very attractive portrait of Augustus. This coins refers to the naming of his grandsons Caius and Lucius Caesar as Consuls and designated princes in waiting. As it happened both died before Augustus and did not fulfill their grandfather’s hopes for dynastic succession. Interestingly, it appears that this coin type continued to be struck even after the boys’ death.

It was struck to commemorate the crushing of the First Jewish Revolt by Vespasian’s legions – minor episode in the history of Rome but with consequences to the Western world (Christianity in particular) reverberating to this day. Not surprisingly this is one of the most popular issues of Vespasian.
